As job-hunting drags on and rejection becomes the norm, procrastination is the name of the game.
Tidying the garage, cleaning the fridge or reading the entire newspaper (instead of just the job ads), suddenly takes precedence.
But having a job-hunting schedule helps and when it is a daily routine, the more you are going to enjoy it!
Here is a suggested daily schedule.
- Job hunting is your job. Get up early, get showered, get dressed, get groomed, get fed, be ready to work. Without fail, as though you would be fired if you did not.
- Start early and give it at least 7 hours a day.
- Have an organised job-hunting space with everything you need around it.
- Organise your files, both printed and electronic in proper folders. Keep track on a spreadsheet.
- Make it a project with a diary and spreadsheet and notebook.
- Tell the people in your life that ‘Job-hunting is now my job.’
- If you find an inspirational article, store in an accessible way. Start your day re-reading one of them, highlight or copy a sentence and read and/or put it into practice often. See the list below of articles on the Silver Mettle website which may be useful.
- If you find an inspirational quote, copy it, and refer to it often. Some people print it and stick it where it can be seen, others have it as a screen save.
- Here is a daily ‘To Do’ list:
- Research: Jobs offered online (newspapers are no longer that useful).
- https://silvermettle.com/work/jobs/ Check this daily
- http://www.indeed.co.za/ is a job aggregator – it gathers jobs from all over. Bookmark the recruitment sites which seem in the line of work you do. Apply and move on.
- Research: Know your hood. Go onto Google maps and put your suburb into the search option. Imagine drawing a ‘commuting’ distance in a circle around it. (There is a scale on the bottom right where you can get a sense of distance.) List all the suburbs. Find 5 companies every day within a commuting distance that you would consider working for. You can do this by using these keywords ‘Companies’ ‘[name of suburb]’.
- Research: Know the Company and find the Decision maker: If they have a website explore it. If you like the look of the company, you should read this: https://silvermettle.com/2016/06/10/approach-employer-directly/
- Research: Jobs offered online (newspapers are no longer that useful).
-
- Real job-hunting: Update your Network list and keep it active by phoning, meeting and at least 3-5 people a day. Read the above article for this too.
- Update your Facebook and Linkedin pages. Let people know you are hunting.
- End of day: Create a list of things you are pleased with and a list for the following day.
